MS14-045 (KB2993651) Fixed and Re-released

Sadly Microsoft has been providing faulty updates this past year. Even I blogged about one a while back. This month, the crappy update was MS14-045, KB2993651. As the web piled up with reports of Blue Screens of Death and other problems, after a few days MS pulled the faulting update from the Windows Update Catalog and recommended uninstalling it even from successful deployments. Good for those who hadn’t installed it yet, bad for those who’d already approved it for install in WSUS or other deployment solutions. Hotfix Adds Support for Windows 8.1 with App-V Server 5.0 SP1

virtual-applicationI’ve been exploring and testing the Microsoft solution for Application Virtualization (App-V). The latest version of App-V is 5.0 SP2. However, for some reason, the downloadable ISO of MDOP 2013 R2 (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack) includes SP2 versions of only App-V Client and Sequencer, not for the App-V Server itself. How to Enable Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection on Windows 8/8.1

It took me a while to figure this one out. All the hype about the improved VM Connection client, which can be run from a client OS, and I couldn’t find the executable anywhere. I searched the web too thinking it’s a separate downloadable component… Instead, it’s more simple than you’d think (or maybe it’s just me… ;)). It’s a feature included within the Hyper-V Management Tools (see the screenshot), which is pretty obvious in hindsight. Continue reading
